Tribute to LFC Fan Andrew Devine

BTR Liverpool, who organise and deliver community legacy event Run For The 97, have released a statement following the sad loss of Liverpool Football Club fan Andrew Devine.

Alan Rothwell, BTR Liverpool Race Director, commented: “We were very saddened to hear the news of Mr Devine’s passing, and would like to pay tribute to Andrew and his family. With the support of our event charity partners, our annual community legacy fun run will now be known as Run For The 97. We will be announcing further details shortly.”

Run For The 97 was first staged in 2015 as a positive community legacy event to celebrate the lives of the 97 Liverpool fans who died in the Hillsborough tragedy on 15 April 1989. The event also remembers the families of The 97 and the survivors, who have tirelessly fought for justice with the utmost dignity.

More than £35,000 has been raised for charity since the event was first staged.

Background to Run For the 97 5K

The Run For The 97 5K was established in 2015 to act as a positive legacy event after a dedicated endurance team had been running between Liverpool and Sheffield to remember the 97 people who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989.

The team led by Dom Williams included members of the Hillsborough Family Support Group and runners who just wanted to show their support for the efforts of Dom's team by running 96 miles! An amazing achievement.

In 2015 it was decided to create the Run For The 975K so that the event could include everyone that wanted to show their support for the 97.

The 5K fun run has attracted amazing support from across the globe with Reds fans from as far away as America and Australia and all points in between taking part. The introduction of the virtual element means that supporters from across the world can now join in wherever they are.

The 5K run itself takes place in Stanley Park and follows a course that passes between Anfield and Goodison Park taking in the eternal flame at Anfield where many participants stop and pause for a moment as a show of respect and remembrance.

As much as the day is about remembering it is also about enjoying the run, gathering together and raising funds for four amazing charities who help, engage and support deserving causes across Merseyside.

They are the LFC Foundation, 23 Foundation and Stanley Park C.I.C.

All four charities play key roles in the local community and the Run For The 97 5K is delighted to have on board as ambassadors for the event.

The event date is always the final weekend of the Premier League football season so there is guaranteed use of Stanley Park on the Saturday with all final day fixtures being played the following day at 3.00pm.

Fundraising Update

Just by taking part in Run For The 97 you are playing a vital role in celebrating the lives of The 97.

This year’s official charity partners are Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation, LFC Foundation, and Stanley Park junior parkrun. Together, they support the vision of creating a legacy event to honour The 97 while ensuring local communities benefit.

First staged in April 2015, the event has gone on to raise more than £35,000 for charity.

Everyone taking part in the 5K or 1 Mile event is invited to fundraise or make a one-off donation – and don’t forget to Gift Aid as this makes a big difference. All monies raised will help support vital community outreach programmes.

Thank you for your support.
